Minister Commends Centra on
Commitment to Road Safety
03/07/2008
Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has commended Centra
on its commitment to road safety for children.
The Minister visited Oakwood Integrated Primary School
in Dunmurry recently to see at first hand the training pupils were
receiving as part of the Department’s Cycling Proficiency
Scheme, which is sponsored by Centra.
Over the past school year 9,372 children received cycle
training and around 7,964 passed the proficiency test.
Mr Wilson said: “Children are our most valuable
resource and I am grateful to Centra for their commitment
to the Cycling Proficiency Scheme and investment in the
safety of children.”
Centra and its independent retailers have sponsored the
Cycling Proficiency Scheme since 2004 and this support
has helped maximise the uptake and impact of the training.
Centra Brand Manager, Nicky Kelly, added “The 86
independently owned Centra stores in Northern Ireland are
proud to support the DOE’s Cycling Proficiency Scheme
by promoting it in their local area. We see the benefits
of schools getting involved as it makes a real difference
to the safety and well-being of young people in our community.”
