Children were encouraged recently by the Department of
the Environment (DOE) and Centra to take extra care on
their bikes as daylight hours shorten and winter approaches.
The ‘Be Seen, Be Safe’ message was promoted
by DOE and Centra as part of the Cycling Proficiency Scheme
campaign and aimed to improve childrens’ road safety
after the clocks went back an hour on October 28.
Cartoon safety character ‘Skooter’, who is
featured in the Road Safety Teaching Aid Calendar issued
by DOE free of charge to every primary school in Northern
Ireland, was used to highlight the message.
Cartoon safety character Skooter joined Ben McMeekin
(10) and Maeve Ainsworth (9) from St. Anne’s Primary
School, Finaghy, Carol Wilkinson, manager of the DOE Road
Safety Education Officer Service, rear, and Centra Brand
Manager Nicky Kelly, front, to remind other children to be
seen and safe.
