Strictly Healthy Dancing for Schools

1st December 09

With dance-mania sweeping the nation in the run up to the finale of hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing later this month, Owen O’Neill (14) from St Patrick’s College, Belfast and Molly Gilmartin (15) from Victoria College, Belfast help leading charity Action Cancer make a call to local schools to get involved in a unique health scheme that will see students dance their way to a healthy lifestyle.

‘Dancercise’, which involves modern dance moves, is delivered by Action Cancer’s Health Promotion team as part of the Health Action programme, sponsored by Centra.

Scoring Owen and Molly on their dance technique are Centra Brand Manager Nicky Kelly, left, Emily Magrath from Action Cancer, second from right, Brittany Edwards (12) and Shanon Murray (15) from the Colin Maxwell School of Dance.

Action Cancer joined forces with Centra and its independent retail partners across Northern Ireland in 2003 to promote the Health Action programme to schools. Centra retailers raise funds to pay costs associated with the scheme and encourage local schools to participate. With their financial support Action Cancer has grown its Health Promotion team from two to seven staff and introduced an awards scheme for health-conscious schools.
