Need some advice on healthy childrens’ lunches? Then look no further than Centra.
Centra has teamed up with Action Cancer’s Health Promotion Manager Emily McGrath to show how to make up a healthy, nutritious and energy filled packed lunch. Emily visited her local Centra store to select items for two sample lunches and break time snacks.
“Children need some fat and sugar in their diet, but fruit, dairy, wholemeal breads, and water or milk should make up the most part of a lunch. A Babybel cheese, berries and two rice cakes make a great snack, followed by a chicken salad wrap, yoghurt and an apple, with a small bottle of spring water. Cheese and chicken provide protein, with fruit and yoghurt aiding digestion. Water keeps the children hydrated, vital for brain function.”
Alternatively, try wheaten bread, cheese and grapes for a snack, with wholemeal ham salad rolls, milk, yoghurt and banana for lunch. The breads are a great source of roughage, with milk providing calcium for strong bones and teeth.”
These lunches cost about £3.50 per day, with savings if you mix items and buy multi-packs. Add variety with different fruits or vegetables, or use rice or pasta salads combined with different meat.
