Twins Pedal Their Way to Safety

18th February 2010

It’s double trouble times five for the Department of the Environment (DOE) Cycling Proficiency Scheme, as five sets of twins at one school – Abbey Primary School, Newtownards – have signed up for the key road safety initiative which is sponsored by Centra.

The ten pupils are helping the DOE launch its safe cycling training, which starts in schools after Easter. DOE is currently writing to all primary school teachers in Northern Ireland outlining the benefits for children who take part in the road safety programme. Primary schools across Northern Ireland will be encouraged to offer cycle training to their pupils.

Centra has sponsored the DOE’s Cycling Proficiency Scheme since 2004 and almost 9,000 children take part each year. For information on the Cycling Proficiency Scheme telephone 028 9054 0094.
