Laurence Fay, an employee at McGoveran’s Centra store on Belfast’s Malone Road recently took part in Action Cancer’s charity trek to the Central American country of Costa Rica, but this was no holiday!
Intrepid Laurence and 9 other trekkers walked 60km over 5 days through the Costa Rican wilderness to raise funds for Action Cancer.
The total amount raised by Laurence, who baked cakes in-store to sell to customers and also designed and produced screen printed cotton bags to raise money in advance of the trip, was a whopping £3,351.
Laurence’s fundraising will benefit Action Cancer’s Health Action health programme for young people, which is sponsored by Centra and its independent retail partners across Northern Ireland. Health Action has been designed to educate young people on healthier lifestyles, including exercise, healthy eating and the dangers of smoking and alcohol.
Action Cancer and Centra have had an award-winning partnership since 2003, to advance the local cancer charity’s health promotion service for schools and colleges and reduce cancer risk among young people. To date over 250,000 young people have taken part in the scheme.
