9th July 2009

8,279 children were successful in their DOE Cycling Proficiency tests this year. 8,674 primary school children aged 9 to 11 years took part in the scheme, which means a pass rate of 95%. The Cycling Proficiency Scheme is delivered by the Department of the Environment and aims to educate children in safe cycling on and off the road and has been sponsored by Centra since 2004. Training for most schools runs from Easter for 10 weeks, with the tests at the end of the school term.

Jack Kelly (11) and Rebecca Dickson (10), from Cavehill Primary School, north Belfast recently passed their tests. They were joined by DOE Road Safety Education Officer Service Manager Carol Wilkinson, rear left, Centra Brand Manager Nicky Kelly and road safety character Skooter.

The children at Cavehill Primary School were lucky in the run up to the tests to have tuition from teacher Nigel Taylor, who is a triathlete and well versed in cycling safely.
